It gives them a place to express their feelings without getting judge by others or having a gun being point at their head. It lets them have a place for a rest from the pressure, sadness, pain and depression they had been through. It also reminds them of their true self. The students in the movie write about their past sad lives in the journals, This is also a way for them to mourn for their sad past, and another way to show that it is time to move on.
